What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is a GLP-1 weight loss injection designed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. This weight loss injectable contains tirzepatide, which works by maintaining blood sugar levels and reducing appetite.  It may also be suitable for people with a BMI of 27 who have been diagnosed with weight-related health conditions:
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels

What are the key benefits of Mounjaro?

Mounjaro offers a range of benefits that support both weight management and overall health. The key benefits of Mounjaro are:
  • Promotes significant weight loss
  • Reduces appetite
  • Improves blood sugar levels
  • Enhances insulin sensitivity
  • Boosts energy levels

How does Mounjaro work?

Mounjaro works by mimicking two naturally occurring hormones in the body, GLP-1 and GIP. These play a major role in regulating blood sugar, appetite and metabolism. By functioning similarly to GLP-1, Mounjaro suppresses appetite, promoting a sense of fullness. This leads to low-calorie intake and aids in weight loss.

How effective is Mounjaro for weight loss?

Mounjaro has shown potential weight losses of up to 15-20% of their initial body weight upon completing the treatment, particularly for individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes.  Mounjaro represents a valuable option for obesity management; it is still essential to consult healthcare providers to discuss tailored plans and potential side effects related to it.

Mounjaro may be suitable for adults who:

  • Have a BMI ≥ 30 (classified as obese)
  • Have a BMI ≥ 27 and suffer from at least one weight-related condition (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or sleep apnoea)
  • Have struggled to lose weight through lifestyle changes
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are not using another GLP-1 medication at the same time

All patients must be assessed by a qualified healthcare professional before starting Mounjaro. This includes reviewing current medications, blood pressure, blood glucose, and overall health status.

Before using Mounjaro, speak to a healthcare professional if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or MEN 2 syndrome
  • Have pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, or severe gastrointestinal issues
  • Are using insulin or other diabetes medications, and so your doctor may adjust dosages to prevent low sugar levels (hypoglycaemia)
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts, monitoring is recommended while on Mounjaro
  • Have any allergies to tirzepatide or components of the injection

Avoid alcohol and fatty meals while on treatment, as they may increase side effects like nausea and indigestion.

Once weekly injection

Mounjaro is injected once a week, on the same day each week.

  • Injection site

Inject it subcutaneously in one of the following areas:

  • Abdomen
  • Thigh
  • Upper arm

Change injection sites with each dose to reduce irritation in a specific area of the skin. Do not inject into muscles or veins. If you have missed a dose, take the next dose within 4 days, and if 4 days have passed, skip the missed dose.

  • Pen use

  • A pre-filled pen is only used once
  • Do not reuse or share your pen with anyone

Always follow the instructions provided during your consultation and on the packaging of the weight loss medication.

Active Ingredient:

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide.

Tirzepatide is a synthetic peptide that activates both Glucose-Dependent Insulinotropic Polypeptide (GIP) and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors. By engaging these receptors, tirzepatide:

  • Enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion
  • Slows gastric emptying
  • Promotes satiety to support sustainable weight loss.

Each pen delivers 2.5–15 mg of tirzepatide per dose as the dosage increases over time.

Inactive Ingredients:

  • Sodium Chloride:

Adjusts tonicity, ensuring patient comfort upon injection

  • Hydrochloric acid/sodium hydroxide:

Used to adjust the pH of the formulation to approximately optimise peptide stability and solubility

  • Water for injection:

Sterile, pyrogen-free water that serves as the primary solvent for the peptide and excipients

  • Stabilisers and buffers:

Includes phosphate buffer components (disodium hydrogen phosphate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate) to maintain pH stability, and polysorbate 20 to prevent peptide aggregation during storage and administration

Manufacturing and Quality Control

Mounjaro pens are made to high-quality standards under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions. Each batch is carefully tested to ensure over 95% purity, is sterile, contains very low levels of toxins, and is free from particles. The pre-filled pen is also checked to make sure it delivers the correct dose and is easy to use.

Safety and Handling

Mounjaro is made with ingredients that help reduce allergic reactions and keep the medicine stable. It has no added preservatives and is meant for one person only. After use, throw away the pen and needle in a sharps bin approved for medical waste.
